Cavity or single-layer walls: which are better?
2012-02-15 14:06

Single-layer walls do not require insulation. Other – cavity walls require thermo insulation. Is the cost of single-layered walls lower then? Are they easier to lay than cavity walls? Check this out:

Single layer walls
Those walls are made without additional insulating materials. They can be laid from aerated concrete blocks, bricks or ceramic concrete blocks. Only those materials give sufficient thermo-penetration indicator U. Walls without insulation must be massive. They are 30-50 cm thick. Those thinnest can be made from blocks, bricks separated with insulation dividers inside.

Cavity walls
The core of cavity wall is the support layer made from bricks or blocks. To it from outdoor a second layer is attached (insulation) thick of 12-15 cm with elevation material. This layer is also called “insulation system”. The system is composed of few properly combined materials. In Poland, few methods are popular: the light wet method and light dry method. First one means that material is attached to wall with glue or mortar. The latter method is that when layers are placed on grill with wooden front. Another possibility is three-layer cavity wall. The difference is additional layer with thin blocks on front.
Cost
Cost of laying those walls is different – but should not be the only criterion for choosing solution. The most expensive are cavity walls. However when counting with other costs, such as thicker foundations and transporting cost, it turns that cavity walls can be cheaper than single layer.
Acoustic isolation
The heavier material is , the better acoustic properties it has. If acoustic isolation is especially important for us, we shall choose three-layer wall.
